Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is when people feel a sudden pain in one or more teeth that is triggered by hot, cold, sweet, or sour foods and drinks.

Many things can cause tooth sensitivity from injury to dental disease, which can destroy tooth pulp.

Sometimes people can cause tooth sensitivity by grinding their teeth or clamping their jaws tightly shut. This type of sensitivity isn't something to worry about if it happens once or twice and goes away in a day or two. But when it persists, there could be a break, crack, or decayed tooth that should be seen by a dentist.

The most common cause of tooth sensitivity is exposed dentin, which is hardened tissue that is beneath the tooth's enamel and contains tiny nerves. When these nerves are exposed, hot, cold, sweet or sour food can reach the nerve in your tooth, resulting in pain.

Exposed dentin can be caused by various factors including: brushing too hard, a hard-bristled toothbrush, tooth decay near the gum line, recession of the gums, cracked teeth, gum disease (gingivitis or periodontics), teeth grinding, plaque build-up, long-term use of teeth whitening products, acidic foods and recent dental procedures.

Diabetes & Gum Disease

Diabetes affects the entire body, including the mouth. People with diabetes face a higher than normal risk of oral health problems because of their blood sugar levels.

Uncontrolled diabetes interferes with white blood cells, which reduce the body’s resistance to infection. Diabetes also causes blood vessels to thicken, which can slow the flow of nutrients and exiting of waste.

Gum disease, also known as “periodontal disease”, is a bacterial infection that affects the gum tissues and bone, which serve to keep your teeth in place. There are two levels of gum disease: gingivitis (an early stage of gum disease) and periodontitis (serious gum disease).

The 26 million Americans who have diabetes may be surprised to learn that there is an increasing number of gum disease cases among people with diabetes.

Studies show that people with diabetes who do not control their blood sugar can develop gum disease more frequently than people who better manage their diabetes. High glucose levels (sugar) in saliva can promote growth of bacteria that causes gum disease.

People with diabetes need to choose a dentist office that is equipped to meet their special needs. Check our website to learn more about the dental care for people with diabetes. Periodontal Disease

We've all heard of gum disease, and know that it can be prevented by practicing good oral hygiene, but did you know that advanced gum disease can lead to permanent tooth and bone structure loss? Advanced gum disease is called periodontal disease. At this point, the inflammation of the gums present in gingivitis has grown to a serious infection. This infection destroys the root of the tooth as well as the nerves, resulting in tooth loss that will not grow back. When teeth are lost, they leave gaps in the jaw which can lead to a sunken appearance of the face. Luckily periodontal disease can be treated if spotted early. For more information on the disease visit our page for a periodontal disease FAQ.

Newport Beach Dentist Discusses How To Avoid Bad Breathe

Bad breath is a common problem that originates from oral bacteria. If you have trouble with bad breath, try some of the solutions below.

Maintain Good Dental Hygiene

It seems obvious, but keeping your mouth clean is the best way to prevent halitosis. The foul smell comes from the bacteria in food debris stuck between your teeth and around your gums. To get rid of that smell, you need to get rid of that debris. Try to…
• Brush at least twice a day
• Floss daily, especially after a high-protein meal
• Rinse with antiseptic mouthwash
• Use a tongue scraper to remove hard to reach bacteria
• Use dry mouth toothpastes and rinses if you find that your mouth is too dry

Keep a Proper Diet
What you eat can be just as significant to the smell of your breath as your cleaning habits. Some diets to consider are as simple as…
• Eating fibrous foods to promote saliva flow and limit bacteria growth
• Staying hydrated with water
• Limiting sugary or acidic foods and drinks
• Eating a healthy breakfast in the morning to start saliva flow early
• Using a straw to keep sugary liquids away from the teeth

Bad breath can be a symptom of serious medical conditions if present alongside discolored mucus, blotches, and/or bumps on your tongue. See your doctor if you notice any of these.

Lumineers Dentist Newport Beach

Orange County Laser Dentistry practice, Image Dental answers questions about Lumineers.

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are a painless and effective way to straighten and whiten your teeth. They work similar to traditional veneers, but are designed to look and feel natural. They are ultra-thin and transparent, allowing your teeth to look natural and eliminating the need for drastic dental procedures.

What is the difference between veneers and Lumineers?

Lumineers are thin and transparent, maintaining the natural look of your teeth. Traditional veneers are thick and require teeth to be shaved down to fit properly, resulting in permanent tooth damage. Lumineers are thin enough to be placed directly on the tooth without the reduction of tooth structure.

Does it hurt when Lumineers are placed?

Lumineers are designed to fit comfortably and naturally. Because they are thin enough to be placed directly on the tooth, there is no need for typical veneer procedures such as anesthesia shots and grinding teeth down.

Newport Beach Cosmetic Dentist Answers Veneers FAQ

Newport Beach Dentist Reviews Veneers

There are often a few questions often asked about Veneers:

What dental problems do Veneers fix?
What are the benefits of Veneers?
What is the lasting length of time for Veneers?

In this blog post we will address these questions.

Veneers procedures are used to fix discoloration of the teeth as well as teeth that have worn down throughout the years. If a patient has a chipped or broken tooth they might want to consider veneers. Typically gaps between teeth and improperly aligned teeth are also cause for Veneers.

Veneers are great because they have the appearance of natural teeth. Gums handle the porcelain very well and they are unaffected by stains. Veneers do not really require major shaping that crowns do and they will offer a strong and nice looking solution.

Typically veneers will remain strong for close to 10 years. After this time they may need to be replaced.
