Newport Beach Dentist discusses gum disease causes

Gum disease does not necessarily cause pain, so it is important to know what to look for. Periodontal disease can cause:

· Swollen, red gums

· Bleeding or loose gums

· Pus between the teeth

· Bad breath

· Change in bite

See your Newport Beach dentist if you experience any of these symptoms. Your dentist or periodontist may need to cover any exposed tooth root surfaces or repair the gum tissue using plastic surgery.

Gum Disease Treatment Newport Beach (Part I)

Periodontics is a field of dentistry that focuses on the treatment of gum disease. Periodontists may also perform periodontal cosmetic and plastic surgery. Periodontal diseases, however, may not be limited to the gums. They can also affect the jawbone and the ligament that holds your teeth to them.

Plaque is the leading cause of periodontal disease. The bacteria in plaque destroy the tissue and bone supporting the teeth. Plaque builds up around your teeth if they are left uncleaned. Teeth that are decayed or crooked can leave unreachable pockets that fill with plaque. Poorly-fitted dentures and oral piercings can also trap plaque. Tobacco, HIV, hormonal fluctuations, and certain medications can contribute to periodontal disease as well.

Please wait for part II.
